Garden
HOME / GARDEN
Nelson Community Food Centre’s Gardens goals are multifaceted in that we want to grow more nutritious food for our customers, provide spaces for educational programming, decrease stigma and raise awareness of the reality of food insecurity in our community, and provide an example of what it looks like to grow your own food.

SELKIRK COLLEGE
In the fourth year of working together, Selkirk College’s SOAR (Steps to Opportunities, Academics & Readiness) program and Nelson Community Food Centre (NCFC) have built a mutually beneficial relationship based on learning opportunities and making connections around good food for all. Together, students in the program, NCFC volunteers, and the program coordinator prepare seed starters and raised garden beds, and then plant the garden at Selkirk. The garden is weeded and watered by volunteers through the summer until the students return to school in the fall, when they work together on the harvest. Half of the harvest goes to students of the program, and the other half is distributed at NCFC’s Good Food Bank.
