Help our four programs make a difference

By donating to the Nelson Community Food Centre you make a difference in the community. We serve more than 1,200 low-income people every month through our Good Food Bank, while our Harvest Rescue, Food Skills and Garden programs offer a place where people can learn, grow and share healthy foods. Donations help make it all happen; those of $20 or more are eligible for tax receipts.

There are many ways you can support the Nelson Community Food Centre:

Monthly
You can help most by joining our Monthly Donor Program. Enrolling is a great way to provide year-round support for our four programs.
One Time

One Time Gifts.  We are very grateful for any and all donations. If a single donation works best for you, that’s perfect.

Gifts of Securities

Gifts of Securities. This is a handy way to support the Food Centre while potentially saving significantly on your taxes.

By making a direct gift of publicly traded securities to the Nelson Community Food Centre, you can achieve far greater tax savings than by donating the cash proceeds from the sale of the securities.  When you make a gift of stocks, ETFs (Exchange-traded fund) or mutual funds, you pay no tax on the capital gains earned. This could provide a tax saving of up to 50 per cent.

A charitable tax receipt is issued for the fair market value of the securities on the date they are transferred to the Nelson Community Food Centre.  To make a donation of securities to the Nelson Community Food Centre, simply instruct your financial institution or broker to transfer your gift of securities using this form (just click this link). This is a great way to reduce the out-of-pocket expense of making a donation. It’s cost-effective, straightforward and is very much appreciated by the Food Centre team.

Organize a Fund/Food Raiser
Funds raised from third-party events help support our mission to increase access to healthy food in a barrier-free manner and to host educational food skills programs. Food raised goes directly on our shelves. Third-party events also increase the public’s awareness of our various programs, and promote community involvement in solutions to hunger.

There are many ways to raise funds from bake sales to barbecues, and performance events to merchandise sales. We are open to exploring all ideas with you.

Please check out our Third Party Event Guidelines to learn more!
