STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY AND A COMMITMENT - NELSON COMMUNITY FOOD CENTRE

HOME / STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY AND A COMMITMENT

Alongside our national and local partners, we at the Nelson Community Food Centre are distressed by the recent and ongoing police brutality and violence against Black, Indigenous and racialized lives. We are also energized and inspired by the protesters and the Black Lives Matter movement calling for justice. We stand in solidarity with them and all others denouncing systemic racism and working to ensure social and economic justice prevails for Black, Indigenous and other racialized people.

Food is central to the human experience and we recognize that food justice is a facet of  socio-economic and social justice.  We know we can do better as individuals, as an organization, and society as a whole.  It’s time for us to listen, learn, and take action.

We commit to:

  1. Continuing to advocate against systemic inequality that disproportionately affects Black, Indigenous and other racialized people and prevents equitable access to food,
  2. Exploring, learning from, highlighting and amplifying anti-racist and anti-oppressive approaches to food justice,
  3. Being educated on and using an anti-racist, anti-oppressive approach in our work, and
  4. Learning from and partnering with local organizations in Nelson to enhance our ability to serve Black, Indigenous and other racialized people.

We continue to stand in solidarity with those facing injustice and we pledge to continue to do our work with compassion, acceptance, dignity and respect.
