HOME / Our Programs
The Nelson Community Food Centre strives to advocate on behalf of our community members around issues of poverty reduction, food security and social justice. Simply put, Food Security is a Poverty Issue, and we are committed to advocating at a local and systemic level for poverty alleviation for community members in Nelson and the surrounding areas.
The Nelson Community Food Centre advocates on multiple fronts, initiatives include:
- Working with our partner organization – Community Food Centres Canada – we promote the establishment of a Groceries and Essentials Benefit and the Canada Disability Benefit.
- Staff have developed relationships with MP Rob Morrison and MLA Brittny Anderson to foreground food insecurity issues in the Kootenay-Columbia region.
- We actively participte in “Nelson at its best”, a network of local organizations & individuals who come togther to reduce poverty, promote and implement civic wellness initiatives.
- NCFC is also a member of the Central Kootenay Food Policy Council and the Nelson Committe on Homelessness
- We run annual Tax Clinics for our community through the CVTIP program and have brought tens of thousands of dollars back into our community.
