Garden

HOME / GARDEN

Date: Throughout the Spring and Summer
Location: 602 Silica Street
Nelson, BC, V1L 4N1.
We also have garden space on our neighbour’s property just north of us and on Selkirk’s Silverking Campus (see below)

The Nelson Community Food Centre Garden is where vegetables are grown for our Good Food Bank, Cooking Series, Workshops and Community Meal programs. It is one more way we are trying to address community food security from many angles – people of low incomes have access to fresh, organic produce; we’re growing the produce instead of buying vegetables trucked in from elsewhere; and gardeners are learning valuable skills.

SELKIRK COLLEGE

In the fourth year of working together, Selkirk College’s SOAR (Steps to Opportunities, Academics & Readiness) program and the Nelson Community Food Centre (NCFC) have built a mutually beneficial relationship based on learning opportunities and making connections around good food for all. Together, students of the program, NCFC volunteers and the program coordinator prepare seed starters, raised-garden beds and then plant the garden at Selkirk. The garden is weeded and watered by volunteers through the summer until the students return to school in the fall when they work together on the harvest. Half of the harvest goes to students of the program and the other half is distributed at the NCFC’s Good Food Bank.
