THE GARDEN
The Nelson Community Food Centre Garden is where vegetables are grown for our Good Food Bank and Food Skills programs. It is one more way we are trying to address community food security from many angles – people of low incomes have access to fresh, organic produce; we’re growing the produce instead of buying vegetables trucked in from elsewhere; and gardeners are learning valuable skills.

SELKIRK COLLEGE
In their fourth year of working together, Selkirk College’s SOAR (Steps to Opportunities, Academics & Readiness) program and the Nelson Community Food Centre(NCFC) have built a mutually beneficial relationship based on learning opportunities and making connections around good food for all. Together, students of the program, NCFC volunteers and the program coordinator prepare seed starters, raised-garden beds and then plant the garden at Selkirk. The garden is weeded and watered by volunteers of the Nelson Community Food Centre through the summer until the students return to school in the fall where they work together to harvest the produce grown. Half of the harvest goes to students of the program and the other half is distributed at the NCFC’s Good Food Bank.
